June MMA Q&A: Light Heavyweight Title, Condit/Cerrone, UFC Drug Testing

June MMA Q&A discussing the light heavyweight title picture, the new UFC drug testing policy, and more.

UFC fighter Alexander Gustaffson

I’m getting pretty lazy with these intros, so I’m not even going to bother this month. Let’s talk MMA.

How come Alexander Gustaffson is getting a title shot instead of Ryan Bader?

Because WHO COULD POSSIBLY CARE ABOUT RYAN BADER?!?!?!?!

This outrage over Bader getting passed over absolutely baffles me. Yes, Gustaffson just got smoked by Anthony Johnson, who just got smoked by Daniel Cormier so MMAth tells me that Cormier smokes Gustaffson, but MMAth is dumb and Gustaffson is a very live underdog against Cormier. Sure it’s dumb that Gustaffson is getting a title shot despite coming off a loss, but Cormier got a title shot coming off a loss and throughout UFC history plenty of guys have gotten title shots coming off a loss.

AND WHO COULD POSSIBLY CARE ABOUT RYAN BADER?!?!?!?!?!

I care about Ryan Bader.

Shut up, Ryan Bader. You got finished by Tito Ortiz in 2011. FINISHED! You didn’t lose a close decision, which still would’ve been pretty bad, but you got FINISHED! Do you know how many guys Tito Ortiz has finished in the UFC since 2002? Two. Ken Shamrock and Ryan Bader. Ortiz won one UFC fight after beating Shamrock a third time. AND THAT WAS AGAINST RYAN BADER! Ryan Bader should never get a title shot in any organization ever. I don’t care who he beats.

The fact that people are upset that Bader isn’t getting a title shot just shows you how weak the Light Heavyweight division is. It was fun when Jon Jones was dominating former champions because you could sell fights on “WHO CAN BEAT JON JONES?!?!” Now you’re selling fights on, “Watch these two losers fight for a fake belt because Jon Jones is an idiot.”

I’ll take no more questions about Ryan Bader or the UFC Light Heavyweight division until Jon Jones returns.

Do you agree that that Luke Rockhold should get a middleweight title shot over “Jacare” Souza?

It’s a toss up. Rockhold had a good run in Strikeforce, where he defeated Souza, and has had an impressive UFC run despite the loss to Vitor Belfort. Souza is undefeated in the UFC, but his wins aren’t quite as impressive as Rockhold’s. I would’ve liked to see Weidman try to continue his “Brazilian Killer” run, but Rockhold vs. Weidman is still a good fight.

Carlos Condit vs. Thiago Alves

Who brought more violence in May: Carlos Condit or Donald Cerrone?

Man, both of these guys brought the violence so hard. Condit literally re-arranged the face of Thiago Alves, while Cerrone literally made John Makdesi quit. I’ll give a slight edge to Condit just because his fight involved blood.

Will both guys fight for the title next?

Both guys would always fight for the title if I was booking. Cerrone seems like a no-brainer, especially since Khabib Nurmagomedov keeps getting injured. Condit could certainly jump the line if Rory MacDonald beats Robbie Lawler. The only two people standing in his way are Tyron Woodley and Johny Hendricks. MacDonald recently defeated Woodley, so that hurts his chances while Hendricks has a pretty strong case for a title shot. The only reason Condit would jump him is if MacDonald asks for it. MacDonald has been wanting to avenge that loss to Condit so if he asks for Condit over Hendricks, he’ll probably get it. If Lawler wins, Lawler vs. Hendricks 3 makes sense and Woodley can rematch Condit since their first fight ended with an injury. And for the love of God that fight needs to be five rounds. In fact, all Condit and Cerrone fights should be five rounds

What do you think of the new UFC drug testing policy?

I think it’s still a lot of words until something actually happens.

It all sounds good, albeit very controlling, but I’m still skeptical.

How is it controlling?

Well, you basically have to tell the UFC where you are at all times in case they want to randomly drug test you. The UFC is basically one of those crazy girlfriends who you have to text every hour on the hour when you’re not with her and if you fail to text her, she’ll do something crazy like slash your tires so you really can’t go anywhere.

You could always take the train, which is now the official transportation of the UFC in Las Vegas.

GREAT IDEA!

I’m convinced that this whole train thing is just a way for the UFC to run an all day event in Vegas. Think about it. They’ll hold three separate cards during the day; one in the morning, afternoon, and night, and you can get to each event via the UFC train. In fact, you get a discount if you use the UFC train in the form of free Reebok gear.

Back to this new drug testing policy. Dana White admitted that a union would’ve never approved this new policy. He said that to show how intense this policy is and how serious they are to clean up the sport, but it also means that it’s so intense that humans who actually care about their rights know that they would be getting massively screwed in this deal. Just like they got screwed in the Reebok deal.

Dan Henderson vs. Tim Boetsch

Did you watch the UFC New Orleans event?

No.

But it was one of the best cards in a long time.

No. The card sucked. The fights, from what I heard, were good, but the card sucked.

You missed out.

If I wanted to watch a bunch of guys that I’ve never heard of with minimal talent fight, I would’ve just gone downtown for the night.

You really missed out. Dan Henderson KO’d some guy.

Cool.

It was a really good event. Maybe better than the UFC Dublin card, which was one of the best ever.

Can we please move on?

Did you at least see Ben Rothwell’s promo?

YES! Finally, something worth discussing from this event. Rothwell saying that we’ve seen nothing yet and then giving an evil laugh ranks up there with Paul Buentello’s “Don’t Fear Me” post-fight promo. Rothwell is somehow on a three fight winning streak in the UFC. Have him fight Junior dos Santos next, and if he wins, give this man all the titles.

Cain Veslasquez fights this weekend.

Allegedly.

What?

I’m not convinced Cain Velasquez is fighting ever again until he actually steps into the cage and the bell rings.

Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum

Fair. Say the fight against Fabricio Werdum happens, who wins?

Cain, unless he’s injured and just didn’t pull out of the fight, which is possible since those AKA guys have no clue how to train and all they do is hurt each other. It’s an intriguing fight and it’s nice to see Cain fight someone who isn’t JDS or Antonio Silva, but Cain’s speed and wrestling should be too much for Werdum.

Are there any good fights this month?

Only the biggest fight of all-time.

Kimbo vs. Shamrock?

KIMBO VS. SHAMROCK!!!!!

That fight is so big that it deserves its own column, which I will deliver on the week of the fight.

I’ll take one more question.

When is Samer Kadi coming back?

That’s all the time we have.
